Considering, too, the large numbers of threatened and disappearing species as result of human activity, the urgent need for methodological-disciplinary progress in ecological landscape conservation has increased in intensity. Various universities and ecological departments and research centers have engaged in research and education on natural resources and environmental conservation, through the formation of research groups, research centers, institutions, among other. However, it is only since the 1990s that this scientific-practical ecology movement gained popularity, reaching thousands of dedicated professionals. The dissemination and application of knowledge on planning and design ecology and environmental conservation has, since then, increased. It is, in this regard, that the publication and distribution of literature on environmental and landscape conservation methods and techniques were instituted by several journals, web sites and media that, along with the increase in the number of professionals in this area, due to the relevance of this discipline, increased its popularization. All these changes in the last two decades have helped strengthen, consolidate and promote the scientific-practical methodology of landscape planning and design, finding its own true area of competence and stability. This article aims to review the ecological planning in a global scale. It offers an account of the most relevant contributions in this discipline since 2000 and will attempt to integrate them in a critical discourse, reflecting on the technical-scientific challenges of ecological planning. However, there are differences between urban planning and ecological planning, where the former is a technical design of the physical aspects of the urban fabric, and the latter is a landscape design of the entire city's eco-system. Unlike urban planning, ecological planning takes into account all the natural ecosystems that exist in the city, in addition to defining and calculating the policies that would benefit those ecosystems. In recent years, ecological planning has become a topic of interest and challenge for many nations, and especially for those that suffer from high urban densities, such as megacities, with the goal of achieving sustainable development in cities. In this context, the planning of sustainable cities that aim to preserve the environment while benefiting the population is a major concern. The plan for urban development takes into account a number of principles, one of which is to preserve the environment by creating a green urban space, which is linked to the human development process. Given this, we can see the city as a unified system with sustainable development. With ecological planning, the theory of planning is more than just the shaping of land-use policies. This type of planning combines biological, hydrological, and chemical aspects, along with the social and economic aspects of the urban areas and the natural environment. These plans enable users to understand the relationships between the city and its ecosystems. Through the planning, the roles of each city function are presented and exposed in accordance with the ecological protection. Thus, the planning process can determine what options are available for the future expansion of the city. During the planning process, the relationship between the urban ecosystem and the natural environment is used to justify the current urban construction and development, whether it be private or public. This planning should, therefore, be more comprehensive and includes not only the environmental considerations, but also the economic, social and political aspects of the urban area and the human quality. It is also assumed that these urban areas must meet a set of criteria which include the preservation of the environment, the human community, and the economy. Other environmental needs are also taken into consideration, and a set of functions must be provided in accordance with each user. The growing concern for a sustainable future has raised an interest in the study and planning of urban ecosystems. This paper presents the new challenges of urban planning, such as the development of a landscape plan that includes ecological values, the design of new urban spaces, the management of complex urban ecosystems, and the planning and design of urban natural environments in support of sustainable development in cities. At present, landscape planning is regarded as an important activity of urban planning, and is commonly considered to be a technique for land use planning. It is, in fact, a set of methods, technologies, skills, and instruments used to create a designed landscape plan. This planning has been discussed for centuries and has been introduced in China in 1992 and the United States in 1995. It has, however, gained popular attention in recent years. Currently, landscape planning is viewed as an important instrument of sustainable development. Because of its vital role in the protection and improvement of natural environment and the protection of biodiversity, landscape planning has become an important theme of discussion in the field of environmental conservation. Landscape planning is linked to urban planning and can provide support for urban development in harmony with the surrounding natural environment. In addition, the cost of urban construction is much lower than that for land use.
