Conventional 'Lawn Tractors' i.e. Engine Mowers
Conventional lawn tractors are propelled by engines or battery operated motors driven by petrol, the engine is mounted at the rear of the tractor, or generally under the rear or top deck.
Vane Type Mowers
Vane type mowers usually have a small propeller driven by an electric motor which is mounted at the top or rear of the mower blade. The propeller is powered by a permanent magnet that is often attached to the blade by a magnetic holder.
Vertical Axial Magnet (VA) Mowers
They are powered by an electric motor mounted at the top or rear of the mower blade to drive a propeller with the blades running in a plane above the surface of the lawn. This arrangement of the motor, blades and blade holder is known as a VA motor. The VA blades are subject to greater deflection than the radial VA blades and are therefore suitable for a more densely shaded lawn.
Radial Magnetic Mowers
They are powered by an electric motor mounted at the rear of the blade to drive a propeller with the blades running in a plane perpendicular to the surface of the lawn. This arrangement of the motor, blades and blade holder is known as a radial motor. The radial blades are subject to less deflection than the VA blades and are therefore suitable for a less densely shaded lawn.
The lawn tractor is powered by a small turbine-like fan, which in turn draws air from the front and rear through its ducts and discharges it through the mower blades, through a hole in the center of the blade. The fan is mounted at the rear of the tractor which means that it does not get in the way of the lawn tractor if you need to trim along fences or shrubbery. The fan can be attached to the tractor in a number of ways, the simplest being that it is simply bolted to a brace plate on the tractor's right-hand side.

Ground-Wind (Windy) Mowers
They are designed to work in windy conditions by providing a smooth, unencumbered ride for the tractor. The motor is powered by a small propeller driven by the air current, usually mounted high up on the rear of the mower. An important feature is a steering control allowing the mower operator to point it into the wind and drive straight ahead.
Solar Powered Mowers
They are also powered by a small wind turbine powered by the sun's energy, but the power is generated through a motionless propeller that can work in low winds and are available for mowing in a cloudy climate. The wind turbine is generally integrated with the solar panel, which has to be mounted at the top of the tractor. When the mower is in motion, the wheel or wheels will be out of the way of the solar panel, keeping it clear of the sun. When the mower is stationary, the wheels or wheels will be in the shadow of the solar panel, and will not generate power. The operator of a solar-powered mower is exposed to the risk of being mowed by the blades when mowing close to the edge of the mower if the mower turns during operation.
Battery Powered Mowers
They are powered by a motor that is either mounted at the rear of the tractor or in the front of the mower, and can provide power for either slow-moving or fast-moving mowers. Batteries are good for outdoor use and are also the basis of battery-powered lawn mowers. The mower blades are driven by an electric motor, which generally gives much more power than the motors used in air-cooled or liquid-cooled mowers.
